App Necessity Challenged: 'An App is Just a Website Wrapped in IP' in Fediverse Tech Debate

Fedilab's developers signaled they will not port the platform to iOS, confining the application to Android due to feature maintenance complexities. This decision forces the core debate onto platform accessibility versus native development overhead. @[email protected] forcefully challenged the premise of native apps, asserting that browser access functions perfectly and that an application is fundamentally 'just a website wrapped in IP.' Conversely, the discussion featured @[email protected] admitting feature parity maintenance across operating systems is 'impractical.' @[email protected] added a speculative layer, predicting an eventual open-source mobile OS capable of competing with established giants. The debate boils down to function versus form. One side argues technical superiority through pure web accessibility, rendering native apps redundant. The counter-argument rests on current operational friction, where maintaining full functionality across platforms is deemed too difficult to manage.

Key points

SUPPORT
Native apps are redundant because they are technically just web content wrapped in IP.
The core argument from @[email protected].
SUPPORT
Maintaining full feature parity across all mobile operating systems is too difficult.
Confirmed by @[email protected], who stated Fedilab will remain an Android-only app.
SUPPORT
Web browsers allow seamless, multi-platform access to decentralized services.
@[email protected] demonstrated accessing multiple platforms via browser interfaces.
SUPPORT
Progress toward a competing, secure, open-source mobile OS is anticipated.
Prediction made by @[email protected] regarding the future state of mobile tech.
SUPPORT
Fedilab developers actively declined to build or maintain an iOS version.
The explicit decision by @[email protected] limits platform scope to Android.

While some of my projects support both Android and iOS, I have no plans to rewrite #Fedilab for iOS. Maintaining all its features across both platforms would be impractical. The app will be modernized with a better UI but will remain a dedicated Android app.

Will we ever see an open source mobile phone operating system which will pass all the required security standards to actually compete against iOS and Android. I think we are moving closer and closer to this era. #ai #fediverse #technology #EU

RE: https://helvede.net/@jwcph/116418843615494321 BTW, I can access both of these platforms perfectly well through a browser - my Pixelfed account I can even add to @phanpy (y no Peertube?). - so why, exactly, is it that we even need apps...? I'm legit asking; I've been wondering this from the beginning of the smartphone era. After all, as @pluralistic says, an app is just a website wrapped in IP. #fediverse #tech #ux
