Apple's Planned Obsolescence Forces Owners to Grapple with Linux Compatibility on Aging Macs

Open Source & LinuxApr 19, 2026score 1.533 posts · 10 replies across 3 instances
A user initiated efforts to run Linux on a 13-year-old MacBook Air, immediately encountering hardware compatibility hurdles, especially with Wi-Fi functionality. The technical divide concerns how deep the dive into unsupported OS upgrades should be. Some users, like @[email protected], reported success running Mint Linux on a 2011 MacBook Pro. Conversely, @[email protected] pushed for the most arduous path, advising custom kernel builds via Gentoo. Another user, @[email protected], offered a positive social dimension to the technical challenge by having his daughter readily adopt Linux Mint. The community broadly accepts that Apple's hardware lifecycle creates a compatibility problem. The practical consensus leans toward testing user-friendly distributions like Linux Mint while acknowledging that highly technical users may pursue complex solutions like BSDs or custom kernels to circumvent Apple's limitations.

Key points

SUPPORT
Apple's ecosystem creates severe backwards compatibility issues for older hardware.
Multiple posts confirm the difficulty of maintaining older MacBooks on current software paradigms, as articulated by @[email protected].
SUPPORT
Linux Mint appears to be a workable, user-friendly solution for older Intel Macs.
@[email protected] confirmed running Mint Linux on a 2011 MacBook Pro successfully.
MIXED
The most technically advanced suggestion involves building bespoke operating system components.
@[email protected] advocated for building a custom kernel via Gentoo, noting the steep learning curve.
SUPPORT
Hardware deficiencies, like integrated Wi-Fi, force reliance on external adapters.
@[email protected] suggested using generic USB Wi-Fi adapters to bypass internal driver issues.
SUPPORT
The transition to Linux can resolve ideological software conflicts, turning technical burdens into positive family experiences.
@[email protected] reported his daughter happily adopting Linux Mint after initially preferring GhostBSD.

Apple's planned obsolesence is infuriating. I have a perfectly good 13 year old Macbook Air, new SSD and battery. I'm wondering if it's possible to install #Linux on it? Linux versions must be more tolerant of hardware, but I'm not sure it's possible to install it. Boosts and help welcome.

I have an ancient MacBook Air that still works but can’t run any newer versions of macOS because it uses an intel chip, and is pretty slow and sluggish presumably because of it. Should I experiment with Linux on it, and would that make it usable again? #macos #linux

#3GoodThings #ThreeGoodThings 1. I quickly and easily installed Linux Mint on a 2015 MacBook Air a few days ago. 2. My disabled and hardheaded daughter who had been insisting she needed a laptop with GhostBSD has now been happily using the MacBook Air with Linux Mint as an interim solution for a few days. 3. My daughter told me this morning that she likes Linux Mint a lot and no longer thinks she needs GhostBSD. Yeah!!! This is what I hoped would happen!!! #Linux
