Artemis II Imagery Sparks Fierce Debate Over Earth's Illumination Source

Science & ResearchApr 18, 2026score 1.1513 posts · 10 replies across 7 instances
Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman shared photographs capturing Earth's intense blue beauty, showcasing visible auroras and zodiacal light as the spacecraft passed by the Moon. The immediate technical dispute centers on the lighting of the Earth's less-lit hemisphere in the key image. Some users, specifically @[email protected], demanded to know where the light originates if the Sun is positioned behind the planet. Other users, such as @[email protected], suggested explanations involving sunlight reflecting off the Moon, potentially combined with long exposures. While general consensus praises the images, the fault lines run deep into orbital physics and optics. One expert, @[email protected], provided highly specific geographical coordinates for the visible landmasses, arguing the central mass is North Africa. The discussion settles on profound admiration for the visuals, but leaves the precise source of illumination unresolved.

Key points

SUPPORT
The images showcase the visible auroras and the planet's overall blue beauty during the Artemis II transit.
This is the consensus view, noted by multiple sources, including the post by @[email protected].
OPPOSE
A user directly challenged the physics of the main photograph, questioning the light source illuminating the 'dark side' of Earth when the Sun is behind the planet.
The core technical challenge was raised by @[email protected].
MIXED
The leading proposed explanation for the unusual illumination involves reflected light, possibly aided by photographic technique.
The hypothesis that light is sunlight reflecting off the Moon was put forward by @[email protected].
SUPPORT
Specific geographical identifications were offered, detailing the large central landmass and surrounding continents in the shot.
The detailed analysis pinpointed the central mass as North Africa, with Spain and obscured South America, according to @[email protected].

Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman took this picture of Earth from the Orion spacecraft after completing the translunar injection burn. There are two auroras (top right & bottom left) and zodiacal light (bottom right) is visible as the Earth eclipses the Sun. https://www.nasa.gov/image-article/hello-world/ #Earth #Artemis #Artemis2 #Orion #Integrity #OrionIntegrity #spacecraft #NASA #Moon #space #aurora

A sliver of crescent moon in the aurora, Friday night over the Goldstream Valley. The moon was only about 3% illuminated. Thin enough that it barely competed with the aurora, but it added something to the scene that's hard to describe. In longer exposures, you can see the full disk lit by earthshine; in shorter ones, only the bright crescent. #alaska #aurora #moon #fairbanks #auroraborealis

A not too wildly successful image of the galaxy NGC 2683 in the constellation Lynx. It's sometimes called the UFO galaxy. It's really too small for my equipment, especially my north-facing equipment upstairs. #science #astronomy

Here’s a lovely picture of our home from Reid Wiseman from the #artemis mission. 😍#astrophotography #aurora I would just pop in the url here, but the share sheet seems wonky. If you install the NASA app, go to the Artemis II tab, and go to News you can see the whole shebang. Plus many other awesome space pics!

The crew reports that the illumination of the Earth is brighter than the one of the moon, still when they are closer to moon than to Earth and Earth appears smaller on the horizon. #Artemis #Artemis2 #NASA #ESA #Moon #WeAreGoing #ForwardToTheMoon #OrionCapsular #ReturnToMoon #Europe #Space #science
