violence, but nor do I think it’s all that wise for us to believe that nonviolence can and will often prevail. The evidence just doesn’t seem to be there. And if these authoritarians do prevail in America, we may not have any choice about which path we take. The most substantive revolutions and rebellions in history have never happened without some measure of violence. If not a lot of it. Nothing to celebrate, to be sure, but an important fact nonetheless.
