Brussels Pushes DSA Regulation; Privacy Advocates Reject Mandatory Identity Checks
Key points
SUPPORT
The DSA forces platforms to meet legally mandated standards, moving content moderation from optional guidelines to legal requirements.
Reported by @[email protected], stressing that platform commitments are now non-negotiable.
OPPOSE
Mandatory identity and age verification systems are viewed by many as a fundamental violation of internet privacy.
Users like @[email protected] and @[email protected] argue these measures constitute unacceptable surveillance.
SUPPORT
There is a strong movement advocating for digital sovereignty through open-source, cooperative, and self-governing technologies.
Advocated by @[email protected], who champions free/libre/open source software operated by co-ops.
SUPPORT
Critics point out that platform engagement models inherently create conflicts of interest, undermining disinformation countermeasures.
[email protected] questioned how platforms can police content while profiting from high-engagement material.
MIXED
The EU's technical implementation, such as using obfuscated link shorteners, is criticized for lacking transparency.
Technically critiqued by @katzenberger on the unreadable and opaque nature of short slugs versus standard, human-readable URLs.
Source posts
We believe in an open and safe internet for everyone in all EU countries.
Major online platforms have shared their latest reports on how they are combating disinformation. Since we brought these commitments under the Digital Services Act, they are no longer optional.
Tech companies now have a clear legal benchmark they must meet, giving us the tools to ensure they follow through on their responsibilities.
Transparency is key to a safe digital space ↓

**Digital Sovereignty Collective**
A key part is that these efforts for digital autonomy shouldn't be undertaken by each organization in isolation. We use similar digital tools in similar ways, and face similar threats. That is the cause of our current vulnerability, but also a perfect starting point for collective action.
If *one* or a handful of organizations manages to defend themselves and their organizing capacity against fascist attacks and sabotage by fascism-aligned tech providers, we will likely all lose, still. To defend our society against fascism, and win our separate-yet-connected struggles, we need **all** anti-fascist orgs and movements to maintain and build their organizing capacity.
If you're part of an organization with values, goals and methods which oppose the values, methods and goals of fascism; read on. Digital Sovereignty Collective is an international network of a few dozen orgs like yours, digital hosting co-operatives/collectives, and tech workers' co-ops; collaborating, helping and sharing knowledge to liberate our own and eachothers' orgs from the clutches of fascism-vulnerable tech.
We believe free/libre/open source software operated by co-operatives is the most reliable, maintainable and future-proof way forwards. Reach out to me if you want to participate.

The #Trump regime is planning to host an online platform that makes available illegal content because.... #FreeSpeech 🤦🏼
"The site will be hosted at "freedom.gov," the sources said. One source said officials had discussed including a virtual private network function to make a user's traffic appear to originate in the U.S. and added that user activity on the site will not be tracked."
What can possibly go wrong.

Microsoft got Europe to write "privacy" laws that stop the disclosure of environmental impact of data centers.
1 They wouldn't do that unless they know it's BAD
2 Anyone doubt that National (and likely Labour) would do/have done the same here?
