Butterfly wing patterns create a motion dazzle effect that confuses predators regarding the insect's speed and direction.

What butterfly wings have in common with barbershop poles: Wing patterns and flight dynamics combine to create “motion dazzle” effect, similar to the barbershop pole optical illusion. That makes it harder for predators to gauge a butterfly's speed, direction. https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/09/what-butterfly-wings-have-in-common-with-barbershop-poles/

🦋 NEW: #Butterfly wings create barbershop-pole style motion #illusions as they deform during flapping, shifting stripe angles and confusing #predators about speed and direction. Simulations of nearly 400 European species showed the effect is widespread, touchscreen volunteers struggled to catch virtual butterflies, and genetic #algorithms evolving over 50,000 patterns independently arrived at similar #designs found in #nature. 👉 https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/09/what-butterfly-wings-have-in-common-with-barbershop-poles/ #vision #evolution #science #wings #motion #ecology #biology #research #simulation #science #wildlife #insects #entomology
