Coachella: $700 Million Economy vs. $22 Onion Crate Wages

Economy & FinanceApr 18, 2026score 1.286 posts · 7 replies across 5 instances
The Coachella music festival is sparking a polarized debate over its economic scale. Proponents cite figures showing the festival generates over $700 million annually for California through tourism and associated local businesses. Opponents, however, zero in on extreme wealth disparity, contrasting high ticket costs with low wages for manual labor. Sentiment is sharply divided between economic necessity and social outrage. Some users, like @ufwupdates, juxtapose the $549 minimum ticket price against an onion harvester earning only $22 for a 900lb crate. Others argue the festival is an economic engine, citing figures from @viraltrenddaily and @byteseu. Meanwhile, some critics focus on ethics, with @floatybirb criticizing the owner's donations to homophobic organizations. A deeper historical point is raised by @matze, noting Coachella originated in 1999 as a reaction against high ticketing prices. The narrative cleaves into two incompatible realities: the festival's massive claimed economic value versus the perceived exploitation of local workers and the astronomical ticket prices. The consensus concern is not about the culture, but about who benefits financially from the $549 entrance fee compared to those doing the physical labor.

The Coachella music festival is in the news with the minimum price of sold out 3-day ticket costing $549. Contrast that with "Nicolas" who is currently harvesting onions in the Coachella area and getting paid $22 for a $900lb crate. #WeFeedYou

I would ask people not to go to coachella because of the owner donating almost a million of dollars to homophobic organizations, but I'm guessing not too many people here go to coachella? This seems more like a "go see a punk band play in a grove in the woods" than a "pay a month worth of rent to see an expensive gig" sort of place. Anyway, if I'm wrong and you were planning on going to Coachella, then consider not doing that, k thx bai #uspol #coachella

Governor Newsom says Coachella and Stagecoach generate more than $700 million annually for California. That’s a useful reminder that major festivals are not only cultural spectacles they’re also economic systems touching tourism, jobs, and local business. #Coachella #Stagecoach #CaliforniaEconomy #FestivalEconomy #LiveEvents #Tourism

The #Coachella Festival was created in 1999 as a reaction / protest against high ticket prices in other venues (which have been controlled by #ticketmaster). In 2026 a regular festival ticket for a weekend costs 700$ and a pack of food (including a drink) costs approx. 50$. You could say, they have overcome their sources. 😂 😠
