Coal Dominance Undermines Narrative of China's Clean Energy Victory

China plans to double its non-fossil fuel energy supply by 2035, according to the Japan Times report. The debate centers on the sincerity of China's 'green shift.' One side, exemplified by @[email protected], argues renewables and electrification have made China an energy winner, diminishing the role of oil and gas. Opposing this, @[email protected] and @[email protected] contend that coal dependence persists, with estimates showing roughly half of China's energy production remains coal-fired. The weight of opinion suggests the narrative is split: while massive renewable build-out is undeniable, the continued structural reliance on coal keeps the emissions profile alarming. Furthermore, @[email protected] and @[email protected] argue the primary driver is industrial ownership, not pure environmentalism.

Key points

SUPPORT
China aims to double non-fossil fuel energy supply by 2035.
Reported by @[email protected] as a concrete commitment to green targets.
OPPOSE
A significant portion of China's energy production is still coal-fired.
@[email protected] stated that roughly half of energy production remains coal, calling the environmental picture grim.
OPPOSE
The green push is fundamentally industrial, not purely environmental.
@[email protected] and @[email protected] both argue the goal is securing ownership over necessary energy industries.
SUPPORT
Renewable growth reduces China's vulnerability to global energy shocks.
@[email protected] asserts that renewables have materially reduced exposure to shocks, diminishing oil and gas's power mix role.
OPPOSE
China's energy focus still reflects traditional oil and gas dependency.
@[email protected] criticized the 'renewable' marketing, pointing instead to lingering oil/gas dependency.

RE: https://social.marxist.network/@yogthos/116421081410663691 China uses/produces 8x more electricity than did in 2000 By far the largest portion of it is #Coal It has also become the largest producer of power from nuclear plants .. so spare us the "renewable" marketing and stick to the oil/gas dependency. With #Russia next door and in good relations with them, the last thing #China is worried about is a #Trump induced #OilShock #Europe is Trump's (#BigOil ) target @tromo

A decade of renewable build-out and electrification have materially reduced China’s exposure to energy shocks, with oil and gas now playing only a minor role in power mix. The oil shock will also force a reset in Asia, the biggest importer of Middle Eastern oil. Japan, Korea and India are now all likely to look for ways to diversify their energy mix, and the equipment needed to achieve that diversification will inevitably come from China. fortune.com/2026/04/09/deutsche-bank-says-china-is-energy-winner-in-age-of-war #china #cleanenergy #news

Much is made of China's accelerating green transition, and certainly the absolute levels of renewable energy acceleration have been impressive.... but, if we look at the overall picture, China remains a country were around half of all energy production remains coal-fired. While, especially in the current global situation this has put China in an enviable position as regards energy sovereignty, as far as emissions & environmental impact this is a grim picture! #emissions #climate #China
