Congress Passes Non-Transparent 10-Day Extension on Controversial Section 702 Surveillance Powers
Key points
OPPOSE
The extension process was opaque, utilizing a non-transparent vote instead of a clear record.
Multiple users, including @[email protected], criticized the method, noting 'no roll call, just a voice vote at midnight.'
SUPPORT
Advocacy groups successfully resisted superficial changes, buying time for deeper reform arguments.
@[email protected] stated lawmakers rejected amendments that wouldn't improve the status quo.
OPPOSE
Specific systemic flaws, like the data broker loophole, remain unaddressed by the current extensions.
@[email protected] warned specifically about the 'data broker loophole and backdoor.'
OPPOSE
Critics argue that the US should prioritize global human rights over endlessly renewing domestic spy laws.
@[email protected] suggested the US focus on basic global rights instead of renewing surveillance powers.
MIXED
The extension itself is short-term, giving only a brief respite before the process repeats.
Reports cite extensions lasting only 10 days or until April 30, indicating a cycle of temporary relief.

In a dramatic middle-of-the-night stand off, a bipartisan set of lawmakers pushing for true reform and privacy protections for Americans bought us some more time to fight!
They are holding out for, at a minimum,
the requirement of an actual probable cause warrant for FBI access to information collected under the mass spying program known as 702.
A reauthorization with virtually no changes was defeated because a core group of lawmakers held strong;
they know that people are hungry for real reform that protects the privacy of our communications. We now have a 10-day extension to continue to push Congress to pass a real reform bill.
The Lawmakers rallied late Thursday night to reject a proposed amendment that made gestures at privacy protections, but it would not have improved on the status quo and would have reauthorized Section 702 for five more years to boot.

🚨🧵@SeanCasten is live-tooting about FISA section 702 "clean" reauthorization taking place RIGHT NOW (at midnight, bc of course it is 🙄). This is concerning and scary shit bc of the huge two items in particular that need fixing: the data broker loophole and backdoor, warrantless surveillance.
Follow Casten for a more detailed explanation. This is important, y'all.

Congress quietly reauthorized a surveillance program that spies on Americans no roll call, no accountability, just a voice vote at midnight. The Senate rubber-stamped the extension until April 30, buying themselves less than two weeks before they have to do this all over again.

🇺🇸 "Law that has allowed U.S. intelligence agencies to collect... overseas communications without needing search warrants is set to expire"
Here is a completely wild thought: instead of changing or renewing it, how about the #USA stops ignoring people's basic rights worldwide? 🤪
