Creators Push Self-Hosted PeerTube Models to Oust YouTube's Algorithm

Hansakwast promotes his content via his dedicated PeerTube instance, QwastTube, explicitly as a digital sovereignty alternative to YouTube. Users are deeply divided between supporting established, large proprietary platforms and actively seeking fully decentralized, open-source replacements. @[email protected] seeks a full federated replacement for YouTube, while @[email protected] promotes its own community-funded PeerTube instance. Specific technical demands surfaced, notably from @[email protected], who questioned support for AV1 format and the feasibility of using a local PC as a video source. The core battleground is migrating video hosting away from centralized giants. The immediate technical focus is on the viability of PeerTube and self-hosting, with a clear tension dividing those advocating for tested, niche instances against the general desire for scalable, decentralized infrastructure.

Key points

SUPPORT
Finding discoverable content without relying on algorithmic feeds is a major pain point for privacy-conscious users.
Multiple users, including @[email protected], note difficulty finding content when bypassing algorithmic clients.
SUPPORT
Promoting dedicated, FOSS instances like QwastTube is framed as a direct counter-movement to corporate video platforms.
@[email protected] explicitly directs traffic to his PeerTube instance for digital sovereignty.
SUPPORT
There is concrete interest in establishing and testing smaller, self-managed federated nodes.
@[email protected] stated an intent to set up a personal, small instance to test alternatives to YouTube.
MIXED
Technical implementation for true decentralization remains a sticking point, demanding answers on formats and source hardware.
@[email protected] pressed for details on AV1 support and fetching streams directly from a personal PC to an indexed instance.
SUPPORT
Community efforts are solidifying around specific, community-funded alternatives rather than waiting for a perfect replacement.
@[email protected] actively promotes its community-funded PeerTube home for creators.

Please start sharing more interesting content from #youtube here for people not using any #YoutubeAlgorithm for example with #privacy focused yt clients it is hard to discover stuff nowadays, I will also try my best from now on. Just had an interaction with a person using a setup like this and we both are sad to not find stuff no more so yeah you get the call.

I just passed 35K subscribers on my YouTube channel and I'm grateful for everyone following my open‑source geo work. But for those who prefer to avoid big tech: my videos are also published on #QwastTube, my own #PeerTube instance. ▶️ QwastTube: https://videos.qwast-gis.com/ ▶️ YouTube (if you still use it): https://www.youtube.com/@HansvanderKwast #FOSS4G #OpenSource #PeerTube #DigitalSovereignty #QGIS #GIS #WebODM #PCRaster #RemoteSensing

@openhomefoundation Or...and hear me out here, even if this sounds crazy, but... you *could* host the Open Home video somewhere... well, "open". Nuts, I know. #OpenHomeFoundation #OpenSource #Youtube #Peertube #Owncast #FOSS #HomeAssistant #Privacy #GAFAM #Selfhosting

Anyone got a #fediverse-esque alternative to #youtube? I just stumbled across PeerTube (https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube / https://joinpeertube.org) and kinda like the idea, may even set up my own (small) instance for some projects to test it further. But I haven't found anything else on that scale.

@MakerTube @peertube @framasoft Few doubts from me : 1) Does #peertube support av1 format? Since it's very storage friendly for the same quality. 2) Can I have #account on ur #instance but actually use my PC as the backend? This way my contents will be just indexed by your instance but #videos are fetched from my pc? 3) Can i upload video and then add 2 languages?
