Declining Case Counts Versus Mandatory Masking Demands: Health Measures Diverge Across US Regions

Science & ResearchApr 18, 2026score 0.6015 posts · 0 replies across 6 instances
Multiple reports indicate that COVID-19, Flu, and RSV case and hospitalization counts are declining or at historically low points across New York City and the US. Public sentiment is sharply divided over necessary health precautions. @grvsmth insists '#COVIDIsNotOver,' repeatedly demanding mask mandates in high-traffic indoor spaces like elevators and supermarkets. Conversely, @augieray cites 'historic lows' and plans to suspend updates until a summer surge, while @AskPippa relays expert opinion suggesting fall waves are unlikely to cause mandates or lockdowns. The weight of discussion shows a clear split: some users maintain high vigilance citing constant risk factors, while others cite current low case rates and expert predictions that mandatory interventions are unwarranted for the immediate future. The debate extends to scientific variables, with @grvsmth adding that CO2 levels influence transmission risk.

Key points

SUPPORT
Masking is mandatory in public indoor spaces because '#COVIDIsNotOver'.
Multiple assertions were made by @grvsmth (@toot.cat) demanding masks in elevators, buses, and supermarkets.
SUPPORT
COVID-19, Flu, and RSV case counts are at historical lows.
Consensus noted by multiple users, with @[email protected] stating COVID is at 'historic lows' and @[email protected] noting ILI is decreasing and RSV has peaked.
SUPPORT
Mandates or lockdowns are unlikely due to expert advice.
Expert sources cited by @[email protected] suggest a fall wave will not induce mandates or lockdowns.
SUPPORT
Transmission risk depends on environmental factors beyond just case counts.
The argument was presented by @[email protected] that temperature, humidity, wind, and CO2 levels affect viral transmission.
SUPPORT
The discussion involves monitoring multiple viruses concurrently.
Users frequently list COVID-19, Flu, RSV, H5N1, and other viruses, indicating general pandemic preparedness concerns (@[email protected]).

#COVID #flu and #RSV case and hospitalization counts are all dropping in #NYC as of February 28. #COVID19 deaths are also down, with only 10 reported in February so far (but that is likely to go up). I'm in Seattle for about a week, and the numbers are similar. I ate lunch indoors and I'm going dancing with friends tonight! #COVIDIsNotOver so I still #WearAMask in elevators, buses, planes, trains, and crowded ferries, pharmacies and supermarkets!

My last weekly update for a while. With #COVID19 at historic lows and no sign a new surge will start soon, I'm suspending my weekly updates. - COVID is very low in 39 states & low in 8 states. - Mississippi has moderate viral activity, and West Virginia is high. - The positive rate of testing is at its lowest point in over a year. Spring should be the safest COVID period we've had since the start of the pandemic. I'll restart the updates when the summer surge begins. https://medium.com/@augieray_66704/covid-very-low-in-the-u-s-update-for-april-17-2026-18218adcc66c

In #NYC as of March 14, #COVID and #RSV cases are down, and so are #RSVirus emergency department visits as a percentage of all ED visits. #influenza cases and #COVID19 and flu ED visits are slightly up, but it's all within normal fluctuations. No new COVID deaths were reported, so we're on track for another relatively low-death month. But #COVIDIsNotOver as long as people are going to hospitals and dying, so I still #WearAMask in elevators, trains, planes, buses, pharmacies and supermarkets!

In #NYC as of March 7, #COVID #flu and #RSV case counts are all down. Emergency room visits are down for #COVID19 and #RSVirus. They're slightly up for #influenza but that's probably within the normal range of variation. I'm really happy that the winter waves for all three diseases were relatively mild, and I hope it's a good long time before we have another bad wave! With 10 deaths in February #COVIDIsNotOver so I still #WearAMask in elevators, trains, planes, pharmacies and supermarkets!

There is a very slight uptick in #flu and #RSV cases in #NYC, which may indicate that we're going to have a relatively rare double wave this #FluSeason, but it's still less than 1% of hospitalizations. #COVIDIsNotOver but #COVID cases are at some of the lowest levels since the virus emerged, and there were 30 deaths in the four weeks ending February 7. You can help prevent a second wave of #influenza and #RSVirus if you #WearAMask on elevators, trains, buses, doctors' offices and supermarkets!

#COVIDIsNotOver and we will have another outbreak before long. Plus, we have #FluSeason every year. Have you considered monitoring carbon dioxide? I checked CO2 levels in several different locations over three and a half years. Here are some observations about its uses and limitations. The likelihood of transmitting #COVID, the #flu or #RSV is affected by factors including temperature, humidity, wind, crowding, viral load, breathing, immune strength and vaccination. https://grieve-smith.com/ftn/2026/02/so-you-want-to-monitor-carbon-dioxide-levels/

#COVID news. Story from @CBCNews A few highlights, link below. "Key indicators are forecasting #Canadians may be on the brink of entering a fall COVID-19 wave. " ...."Health experts consulted for this piece agreed that a fall #COVID-19 wave would be unlikely to induce mask #mandates or lockdowns. " "I don't think there's anything that we're seeing right now that would suggest we should go into #lockdown or anything like we've seen in the past, in terms of early pandemic #publichealth measures.," Graber said. ... Razak did distinguish between general mask mandates and those for higher risk environments like #hospitals, adding that the latter is something he hopes provinces will consider. " ""Most experts are advising to hold off on getting a# booster until the new #vaccines have arrived, which experts say are expected mid-fall." ""If you're young and healthy and overdue, just wait until the new boosters come out," he said. "But if you're somebody of substantial risk and you're due for your booster, you should probably get it now. Even current vaccines will protect you from acute infection for a good month or two." #medical #IDmastodon @medmastodon #medmastodon #health #mask #Canada www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/more-covid-cases-are-coming-here-s-what-you-need-to-know-1.6951092
