EU Mandates Age Gate via Digital Services Act; Hackers Claim Flaws Expose Surveillance Risks

Privacy & SurveillanceApr 19, 2026score 1.0112 posts · 10 replies across 8 instances
The European Union is pushing for mandatory online age verification systems under the Digital Services Act, specifically scrutinizing platforms like Snapchat for failing to shield minors from illegal content. Prototype testing has already revealed that these systems can be breached by security researchers in minutes. The community views the mandate through two polarized lenses. Proponents worry about online harms to children, while critics argue the technology enables unacceptable surveillance and data misuse. Users like @[email protected] fear data leaks to US Big Tech, while @[email protected] warns the system is a 'Pandora's box' leading to required surveillance standards. Conversely, @[email protected] argues parental education, not government ID submission, solves the problem. The overwhelming concern is that the drive for perceived safety creates a massive infrastructure for government control. While some, like @[email protected], suggest privacy-preserving tech like Solid pods offers a way forward, the prevailing sentiment among critics is that the systemic overreach outweighs the targeted safety benefits.

Key points

SUPPORT
The EU is pressuring platforms like Snapchat over child safety failures under the Digital Services Act.
Politico reports on EU probes into Snapchat regarding grooming and illegal goods content.
OPPOSE
Early prototypes of the EU age verification system are easily bypassed by security researchers.
Multiple sources noted that the system was reportedly broken in under two minutes.
OPPOSE
Critics fear the technology creates a surveillance pipeline susceptible to data misuse by governments or US tech giants.
@[email protected] stated the intent is to hand data to US Big Tech.
MIXED
Some users suggest privacy-first technological workarounds exist, bypassing the need for central ID checks.
@[email protected] pointed to Solid pods and zero-knowledge proofs as potential solutions.
OPPOSE
Some users argue parental education and local networks are superior replacements for mandatory governmental ID checks.
@[email protected] asserted that parental education should replace centralized ID submissions.

What is interesting about the whole EU age verification app is that it sort of moves towards the original concept of Solid pods; aka you storing your own little data vaults instead of the services that use your data. "The app lets you prove you are above a given age threshold without handing the requesting platform your name, document number, birth date, or anything else." https://doriandiaconu.substack.com/p/eus-age-verification-app-zero-knowledge?triedRedirect=true #euverification #privacy #opensource

Brussels launched an age checking app. Hackers say it takes 2 minutes to break it. critics of age blocks say the technology to check people’s ages with proper privacy and data protections just isn’t ready — and even if it was, internet users would easily bypass it with things like virtual private networks (VPNs) #europe #EU #ageverification #privacy #security #cybersecurity #hackers #hacking #hacked https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-brussels-launched-age-checking-app-hackers-say-took-them-2-minutes-break-it/

EU Is Rolling Out an Online Age Verification App That Could Become the Global Blueprint The app, a Europe-wide measure of government-approved age verification, would be a significant step towards an eventual EU-wide social media ban for minors. #europe #EU #ageverification #socialmedia #privacy #technology #tech https://gizmodo.com/eu-is-rolling-out-an-online-age-verification-app-that-could-become-the-global-blueprint-2000746948

They simply do not care about our data being leaked. They intend to hand it to the US Big Tech on a silver platter anyway. https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-brussels-launched-age-checking-app-hackers-say-took-them-2-minutes-break-it/ #privacy #surveillance #surveillanceState #ageVerification #ageGate #censorship #technofascism #identityVerification #EUropeanUnion #EU

I'm still conflicted on the #EUverification app. Aside from the technical issues and Google dependency, I'm not a fan of the surveillance creep this introduces. But also, being childfree, I'm not exactly an expert on what kids need to be protected from. I do see that the EU is trying to build the "least bad" option, #opensource and zero knowledge proof etc, but "which country you live in will shape how much of the privacy promise actually survives implementation" sounds *slightly* worrying.
