Hashtags and Ghost Content: Mastodon Users Battle For Visibility Against Meta Exodus

Fediverse & CommunityApr 18, 2026score 0.648 posts · 0 replies across 7 instances
Specific users actively promote Mastodon as an escape from Meta platforms, citing sources like Cory Doctorow for validation. Technical observations point to the platform seemingly reviving content from years past, with some users noting posts over three years old reappearing in notifications. The core arguments center on visibility mechanics. @[email protected] defends hashtags as a 'NECESSARY' tool for exposure, countering critiques that they are desperate. Conversely, @[email protected] expresses confusion over how following hashtags functions across disparate instances. General sentiment also includes anxiety about social interaction success rates, noted by @[email protected]. The community shows a clear, if unsettled, pull toward Mastodon, seeing it as a viable alternative to Meta. However, the technical utility of features like hashtags remains hotly debated, suggesting platform mechanics are not fully understood or uniformly accepted.

Gotta love @pluralistic Every new post from Cory Doctorow is both enlightening and amusing. So glad I escaped #Meta and I have tried in earnest to encourage friends to follow to #Mastodon, but so far, no joy. https://pluralistic.net/2026/04/17/for-youze/

@evan Wait, what? If I follow hashtags on one instance, I only see stuff from that instance? Something is rotten in the state of Denm... Eh, Mastodon. #mastodon #mastoadmin #mastolivre #masto

RE: https://ieji.de/@kq/116232242703592940 coming back to the thought i had a month ago: i don't find it desperate to be using hashtags anymore, it's just one way to get more exposure to the thoughts that i put out in the world. it is needy when you put all the possible hashtags that can relate to the post that you make, but regardless, it's NECESSARY in mastodon to actually get yourself out there, and possibly get engagement. it's not evil. #mastodon #fediverse #hashtag #engagement

One of the interesting things about Mastodon's hashtag-based environment is that older posts seem much more likely to be revived than at the other place (not that I've been there for years); I've recently seen posts over a year old (in one case nearly three years old) suddenly pop up in my notifications & regain a little traction (a sort of glimmer across time). Not sure why Masto prompts such revivals but its interesting nonetheless... not least as it reminds me of things I said! #Mastodon
