Local Macro Ecology Logs Heavily Document Heidelberg Fauna, Including Leafhoppers and Specific Spiders

Science & ResearchApr 19, 2026score 0.538 posts · 0 replies across 2 instances
The content is a detailed, sequential photo log focused on the taxonomy and macro photography of local insects and arachnids observed in the Heidelberg area. The author, @[email protected], documents multiple specific sightings, including the leafhopper (*Penthimia nigra*), the German scorpionfly (*Panorpa germanica*), and several spider species. The observations consistently ground the activity in the Heidelberg location, focusing intensely on local biodiversity records. Interspersed within the local records are periodic, unrelated posts reposting the iNaturalist Observation of the Day, specifically featuring New Zealand Glowworm observations from West Coast, NZ. The primary local content, however, involves the author methodically differentiating between common pests and species, such as confirming a bug is a red cabbage bug (*Eurydema*) rather than a cinnamon bug (*Corizus hyoscyami*). The user also documented encounters with the European nursery web spider (*Pisaurus mirabilis*) and the common pumpkin spider (*Araniella cucurbitina*). The overwhelming weight of evidence shows a singular, highly focused passion for local entomology. The community engagement, though present through general boosts, centers entirely on the detailed, localized documentation of flora and fauna specific to Heidelberg, treating the iNaturalist reposts as peripheral, geographically distinct interruptions.

Key points

SUPPORT
The author explicitly documented multiple insect encounters in the Heidelberg garden, identifying species like *Penthimia nigra* and *Panorpa germanica*.
The core of the documentation involved precise identification of local fauna, noted by @[email protected].
SUPPORT
Specific arachnid sightings were meticulously recorded, including *Pisaurus mirabilis* and *Araniella cucurbitina*.
The author provided distinct identification for garden spiders, reinforcing the local focus on macro photography.
SUPPORT
The content draws a sharp taxonomic line, correcting potential misidentifications (e.g., confirming *Eurydema ornata* is not *Phyrrocoris apterus*).
This demonstrates deep, comparative knowledge of local red/black patterned insects, as posted by @[email protected].
MIXED
There is a noticeable editorial drift with unrelated content from New Zealand.
The iNaturalist reposts feature New Zealand Glowworm observations, which clash topically and geographically with the Heidelberg focus.

Wind of change 🙂 Colder & blustery today, with intermittent bright sun & dark clouds ⛅️ Still, nice to see a scorpionfly for the first time this year 🦂🪰 From the wing markings & lack of the large male genitals that give these species their name, this is likely a female German scorpionfly (Panorpa germanica; 🇩🇪 Deutsche Skorpionsfliege). #Heidelberg 🏰 #Photography 📷️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ #BugOfTheDay 🐞 #MacroPhotography 🔬 #InsectsOfMastodon 🪰 #BackGardenEntomology 🪲

As befits its name, the cabbage bug is on evergreen candytuft flowers (Iberis sempervirens), part of the Brassicaceae family. The bug also comes in a vivid red, black, & white form, like a sports jersey, so I'll look out for that. For comparison, here's another red & black bug, this time a cinnamon bug (Corizus hyoscyami; 🇩🇪 Zimtwanze). #Heidelberg 🏰 #Photography 📷️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ #BugOfTheDay 🐞 #MacroPhotography 🔬 #InsectsOfMastodon 🪰 #BackGardenEntomology 🪲

Next, yet another species of bug with a firebox red & black pattern. It's not a fire bug (Phyrrocoris apterus) or a cinnamon bug (Corizus hyoscyami) – this is a cabbage bug, genus Eurydema. Most likely, given the pattern & my location, a red cabbage bug (E. ornata; 🇩🇪 Schwarzrückige Gemüsewanze). #Heidelberg 🏰 #Photography 📷️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ #BugOfTheDay 🐞 #MacroPhotography 🔬 #InsectsOfMastodon 🪰 #BackGardenEntomology 🪲

Third, a very brief encounter with a small spider that was whizzing from plant to plant along a network of silk. I think I managed to get good enough pictures to identify it though – it's a cucumber spider, genus Araniella, & most likely A. cucurbitina, the cucumber green spider (🇩🇪 Gewöhnliche Kürbisspinne, aka common pumpkin spider 🙂) #Heidelberg 🏰 #Photography 📷️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ #BugOfTheDay 🐞 #MacroPhotography 🔬 #ArachnidsOfMastodon 🕷️ #BackGardenEntomology 🪲

And while this isn't a new species for me this year, it's always good to see one of the bigger garden arachnids – the European nursery web spider (Pisaurus mirabilis; 🇩🇪 Listspinne). #Heidelberg 🏰 #Photography 📷️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ #BugOfTheDay 🐞 #MacroPhotography 🔬 #ArachnidsOfMastodon 🕷️ #BackGardenEntomology 🪲

A few more from today & yesterday, starting with this rather inconspicuous leafhopper, Penthimia nigra (🇩🇪 Mönchzikade). I've been seeing the brown larvae in the garden since mid-January, so it's good to know that they've grown into adults. I hope to get some decent pictures of their red eyes from the front in the coming weeks. #Heidelberg 🏰 #Photography 📷️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ #BugOfTheDay 🐞 #MacroPhotography 🔬 #InsectsOfMastodon 🪰 #BackGardenEntomology 🪲
