Mastodon's Hard-Coded Timeline Flaws Clash with User Demands for Metrics

Fediverse & CommunityApr 18, 2026score 0.623 posts · 0 replies across 3 instances
The core functionality of the Mastodon timeline is fundamentally restricted. Specifically, users cannot view the count of likes or boosts while scrolling the main feed, a limitation enforced by the Mastodon project itself, as documented in issue #420. Users present conflicting priorities. @[email protected] points out the technical cap on visibility metrics. Meanwhile, @[email protected] reports persistent technical bugs, such as missing profile pictures. Other contributors, like @[email protected], offer detailed guides on advanced timeline customization, suggesting workarounds for feed management. The general consensus acknowledges the platform's technical shortcomings. Users are actively managing expectations against known design flaws. Reliability concerns, like missing profile pictures reported by @[email protected], and technical restrictions trump advanced customization tips.

I've had problems with Mastodon in the past. At least a few times a week I've had missing profile pictures for people in my feed. I will make another attempt this weekend, but I'll keep this Akkoma server as my main fediverse driver until I see that I don't have any issues with the Mastodon server I'm going to set up. #Mastodon #Akkoma #MastoAdmin #FediAdmin #Fediverse #SelfHosting

#PSA if you ever wanted to see information like number of likes and boosts as you scroll through your #Mastodon timeline, you can do the following: Just kidding, you can't :) The Mastodon project decided back in 2017 that you shouldn't be able to do this because It's For Your Own Good. github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/420 Hope you enjoy not having the option! A Mastodon specialty. Have a nice day.
