Mastodon UI Overhaul Imminent; Users Face Security Risks on Outdated Instances

Software & AppsApr 19, 2026score 2.233 posts · 10 replies across 3 instances
Mastodon instances are undergoing mandatory UI updates from @[email protected], necessitating changes and potential downtime, particularly affecting users on older browsers. Reception to the update is sharply divided. Some users expressed distress over losing familiar design elements, with one user lamenting, 'My cheeeeese! 😭'. Others offered immediate support, declaring the change a pass. Separately, @[email protected] flagged a critical security vulnerability, noting that users on BitBang.social are running unsupported Mastodon 4.0.15, requiring immediate migration. The immediate necessity for security patching outweighs design preferences. While the UI overhaul causes friction, the consensus points to necessary technical maintenance. The critical, unpatched instances represent the most pressing operational risk.

I’m going to update mastodon across the infosec, ioc, and convo instances today. There shouldn’t be any downtime but there are user interface changes and for that I will apologize in advance to everyone who doesn’t like their cheese moved. There isn’t an option to keep it like it was. And yes, this will probably continue the trend of breakage on old devices with browsers that can’t handle newer functionality. I’m sorry for that too.

No offense to Sean, but if you’re on BitBang.social, you should be aware that it’s on Mastodon 4.0.15 which is WAY out of date at this point. Even Mastodon 4.3 is no longer supported in a few weeks: https://endoflife.date/mastodon Your identity info is at risk without security patches. Switching instances is not fun, but consider another one. I’ve had a great experience at the similarly-themed OldBytes.space Official step-by-step instructions to move: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/

We haven’t released a lot of new updates this year so far, because we are working on the browser version of Foto for the most part. We have one team member only working on the browser version and another assisting and helping with bugs/performance updates. We are going to release 1-2 more bug/performance updates and then we are going to focus both team members only on the browser version until it’s done. All bug and performance fixes will pause during this time.
