Official Mastodon App Funnels New Users to mastodon.social, Alienating Local Instances
Key points
OPPOSE
The default app flow defaults new users to mastodon.social or .online.
Multiple sources, including @[email protected], confirm the app makes these two instances the only easily visible options during sign-up/login.
OPPOSE
Forcing centralization discourages users who wish to diversify their presence.
@[email protected] notes that directing users away from other instances is a 'labor-intensive task' that could drive away casual users.
OPPOSE
The app's focus risks hiding the utility of regional, non-English feeds.
@[email protected] warns that the emphasis on .social makes the team undervalue local/regional feeds, especially for international audiences.
OPPOSE
Workshop evidence shows new users intend to join local servers, not the main hubs.
@[email protected] reported that workshops showed attendees wanting to end up on 'our' specific server, challenging the app's default routing.
SUPPORT
Alternative apps are available as workarounds for the official app’s flaws.
@[email protected] recommends white-label alternatives, citing the croeso.toot.wales mobile app.

The new profile design in the #Mastodon (iOS) app is neat!

One thing I do dislike about the official #Mastodon app is how it’s all driven towards either mastodon.social or .online
The default button signs you up on mastodon.social and when pressed ‘login’ the two instance suggestions are only those two
That makes it unnecessarily harder for people on our instance for example to easily get started on the app
