The thread discusses the recent release of 722 AI-generated mathematical papers by OpenAI, which has caused shock among mathematicians. Some argue the term 'mathocalypse' is sensationalist, while others note the community is processing the implications of these results. The discussion also touches on the role of ArXiv in managing high-noise submissions and the historical context of mathematicians responding to public fears.

https://theconversation.com/is-this-the-mathocalypse-why-openais-latest-results-dump-has-left-mathematicians-in-shock-293837 I get that the topic deserves attention, but "mathocalypse" seems sensationalist. OpenAI got the recent results out the way they could. Mathematicians seem to be processing what is relevant. ArXiv foresaw the possibility of dealing with high-noise submissions and instituted limitations. A community's emotions can take a while to settle when jostled. Navier-Stokes jostled it. So the recent drop may seem 300x worse, but mathematicians have a lot more agency over this than Buckmaster and Alpöge did over that. Recall: The computer (Turing Machine) was the mathematician's response to a public's apocalyptic fears of far greater proportions. #MathAndAI #mathematics

Is this the ‘mathocalypse’? Why OpenAI’s latest results dump has left mathematicians in shock https://theconversation.com/is-this-the-mathocalypse-why-openais-latest-results-dump-has-left-mathematicians-in-shock-293837 OpenAI released 722 new AI-generated mathematical papers at once – three have been retracted, and mathematicians are coming to grips with the rest. --- 80 uses from 74 accounts #toplink
