Switching perspectives mid-chapter can confuse readers and negatively impact the reception of a story.

#ScribesAndMakers August 9. Have you ever switched perspective (1st, 2nd, 3rd person, 3rd close, cinematic, etc) mid-chapter/story? Was it successful in your opinion? There's a couple of times I switch into 2nd person from 3rd in TBOTB, It drove an editorial reviewer into a spralling meltdown, and he also described the book as "meant" to be funny ...don't think he liked it. 🙂

Did it with the last manuscript I queried. Did interlude chapters that switched POV and went to second person. It got a few full requests, both from small presses and agents, but no one picked it up. So, I’d say not that successful.

Had a fair number of readers tell me they get confused if the book has more than one perspective at all. Even switching at a chapter is hard to handle. So I'd say it is probably something to avoid with my audience.
