R to @TomasZdechovsky: In response to our long-standing warnings about systemic problems and suspected fraud in the distribution of EU funds in Slovakia, the European Commission has now taken action. ‼️
It is proposing to withdraw the accreditation of the Agricultural Paying Agency. The audit uncovered serious deficiencies — from insufficient oversight of how funds are used to failures in recovering misused money. These are exactly the issues we have been highlighting for a long time and pushing to have addressed.
European funds must be subject to strict control. They cannot end up in opaque structures or be misused. Unfortunately, Slovakia and its government have been failing in this regard for quite some time. And those who will suffer most are the ones who did nothing wrong: honest applicants who may lose funding due to government inaction.
But the rules must apply to everyone. And those who break them must face the consequences.
