The renaming of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' by Google Maps reflects a political attempt to assert national identity over a shared natural resource.

“Google's Calling Lake Ontario 'Lake America' Now” https://www.404media.co/google-maps-lake-america-lake-ontario-name-change/ Fuck you, Google.

Lake Ontario now called Lake America on Google Maps for U.S. users after Trump ordered name change https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/lake-ontario-now-called-lake-america-on-google-maps-for-u-s-users-after-trump-ordered-name-change?utm_source=flipboard&utm_medium=activitypub Posted into Politics @politics-PBSNewsHour

Google Maps now shows Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for U.S. users, after an executive order and a federal name-database update. Canadians still see Lake Ontario, and everyone else sees both names. Meanwhile, Apple Maps hasn't budged, and MapQuest flat-out refused ("We're not changing it"). Sound familiar? Same drill as the Gulf rename, when reviews got so spicy Google shut them off. FYI, your GPS still knows the way. The lake, for its part, declined to comment.
