The U.S. executive order prompted Google Maps and Apple Maps to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for U.S. users.

Apple Maps is renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. Change is rolling out now. Google Maps kissed the ring again. tRump signs paper renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” to poke Canada & they flip it for US users in days. Half that lake is Canadian! The name is older than this country. MapQuest said no. Apple still hasn’t caved. Google Maps renames "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" even faster than US government Google rolled out the Lake America change on Saturday, while the official US government maps are still waiting. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/08/google-maps-renames-lake-ontario-to-lake-america-even-faster-than-us-government/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

Google Maps now shows Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for U.S. users, after an executive order and a federal name-database update. Canadians still see Lake Ontario, and everyone else sees both names. Meanwhile, Apple Maps hasn't budged, and MapQuest flat-out refused ("We're not changing it"). Sound familiar? Same drill as the Gulf rename, when reviews got so spicy Google shut them off. FYI, your GPS still knows the way. The lake, for its part, declined to comment.

"While Apple Maps did adopt the Gulf of America name shortly after Google last year, it has not yet scrubbed Lake Ontario from its maps as of this posting. Some less-used mapping apps like MapQuest have vowed not to make the change at all."
