Historic turning point in women's tennis: in 2027 equal prizes to men for all tournaments with a combined ranking of 1000. Next season will mark a historic moment for women’s tennis: for the first time, the prize money offered for the Wta 1000 combined – that is, those tournaments in which men’s and women’s competition take place simultaneously within the same venue – will be equal for men and women. This was announced by the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) on the occasion of the reveal of the 2027 calendar, which, among other things, besides consolidating existing elite women’s tennis circuits worldwide, introduced a new Wta 250 tournament in Manila, Philippines. But the real revolution concerns the Wta 1000 combined tournaments, particularly popular and followed by enthusiasts around the world: these include the Internazionali BNL d'Italia (Rome), the National Bank Open (Montreal/Toronto) and the Cincinnati Open. These tournaments join the BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells), the Miami Open, the Mutua Madrid Open and the China Open (Beijing), as well as the United Cup and all four Grand Slam tournaments, in their commitment to offer equal prize money to men and women. “The WTA is committed to offering more to players and tournaments in 2027. We have listened to player feedback regarding calendar needs and responded with a significant reduction in commitments. The achievement of parity in prize money in all Wta 1000 combined tournaments represents a milestone for tennis,” said Valerie Camillo, President of the WTA. The association was founded in 1973 by the “Original 9” – nine tennis players who in the 1970s rebelled against official federations to establish an independent circuit – Billie Jean King and other 60 players who aimed to compete and be valued on equal terms: a principle that, evidently, after years continues to inspire the WTA’s mission.
