Lebanese environmental activist Mona Khalil has died today from the injuries she sustained following an Israeli airstrike that targeted her home and the Orange House Project in the village of Mansouri in southern Lebanon on 5 June 2026.
Khalil was known as one of Lebanon’s most prominent environmental defenders, dedicating more than two decades of her life to protecting endangered sea turtles along the southern coastline, which earned her the title of “guardian of the turtles”.
She managed the Orange House Project, an environmental and tourism initiative based in her seaside home, where she hosted volunteers and visitors and contributed to protecting turtle nests and monitoring hatchlings, in addition to campaigning against pollution and the destruction of natural habitats.
